Perfectly Seamless Tooth Restoration

A dental crown is like a cap that fits over a tooth that’s broken, has a root canal, is stained, damaged by decay, or doesn’t have the right shape. Each crown is custom-made to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth, giving a perfect, seamless look that can last over 15 years. They can also support dental bridges, cover implants, or be used for cosmetic touch-ups to enhance your smile.

What’s the Process of Getting a Crown?

The dental crown procedure typically involves two office visits and is carried out by a dentist.

Here is how we go about it:

Examining and preparing the tooth

Like any dental treatment, the process begins with a dental exam where the dentist checks and cleans your teeth to ensure proper fitting. If the tooth is broken or significantly damaged by decay, the affected areas will be removed, allowing the dental crown to protect the tooth from further damage.

Shaping the Crown

First, we take an impression of your teeth using dental putty to create a full porcelain crown. You’ll receive a temporary crown to wear until your next appointment. If you’re replacing a missing tooth with an implant, we’ll take an impression of the implant and the nearby teeth. This impression is then sent to our lab, where your custom crown is made just for you.

Placing the Crown

During your second visit, the temporary crown is removed and replaced with a permanent one, which is secured using strong dental cement or a hidden screw. To finish, the crown is polished, and any adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Cost of Dental Crowns in Ottawa

The cost of a dental crown can vary greatly, depending on your situation. For those with insurance, a single crown typically ranges from $200 to $600 or more. Without insurance, the cost usually falls between $800 and $1200 or higher. While many find dental crowns to be a straightforward way to restore their smile and oral function, the expense may still be a consideration for some.

What Determines the Cost of a Dental Crown?

Several factors influence the cost of a dental crown, including:

  • The type and material of the crown
  • The location of the tooth and complexity of the procedure
  • The number of crowns needed
  • Combining the crown with other dental appliances, like bridges
  • The specific supplies and equipment required for your treatment

Since every smile is different, providing an accurate quote over the phone isn’t possible. To understand your treatment options and receive a precise quote, it’s best to have an oral exam and speak with a dentist. If you have dental insurance, we can provide a quote for you to submit so you’ll know your out-of-pocket costs before making a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you need a crown after a root canal largely depends on the tooth’s location. Back teeth, like molars and premolars, typically require crowns since they handle more chewing. Front teeth, such as incisors and canines, don’t always need crowns because they’re less involved in chewing.

The main difference is durability. Crowns are better suited for teeth with large biting surfaces because they can withstand more pressure from chewing or clenching over time. Fillings on molars may chip or loosen under constant stress, while crowns, covering the tooth from gumline to gumline, provide a stronger, long-lasting solution.

Dental crowns are designed to restore both function and appearance. They allow you to chew comfortably without pain and are coloured and shaped to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Often, you might forget which tooth has a crown because of how naturally it matches.

A dental post reinforces the base and core of a crown but isn’t the same as a dental implant, which is surgically placed into the jawbone. Posts are used when there isn’t enough healthy tooth left to securely hold a crown, providing stability to the prepared root canal.

The experience of getting a crown is similar to getting a filling. We numb the area and use freezing to prevent pain during the procedure. Some sensitivity or gum soreness may occur afterward, but it’s temporary. If you feel anxious about dental visits, let us know so we can ensure a comfortable experience.

Typically, dental crowns last up to 15 years. With proper care, they can last even longer, sometimes up to 25-30 years.

Caring for a crown is much like caring for a natural tooth—regular brushing and flossing are essential to keep both the crown and the surrounding gum healthy. Routine dental cleanings and checkups are also crucial for maintaining overall oral health.

I was Dr Ball’s patient from January 2001 until this year — I moved to Montreal in mid-March. Unfortunately I have had to seek a new Dental clinic in this location and it has made me truly realize how fortunate I (and my family) had been with Dr Ball all these years. Dr Ball and his hygienists, assistants and Catherine were wonderful and ensured that the experience with this dental clinic was always superb. Thank You for the great service! Mary Catherine Hung
